ANNUAL VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Chorale Presents 12th Annual Scholarship Awards

Sunday March 9, 2008 marked the twelfth annual scholarship awards presentation by the Livingston County Chorale. The awards were presented by Founding Artistic Director of the Chorale, Dr. Marilyn S. Jones.

2008 Winners

1st place - Winner of the Sr. Jane O'toole Memorial Scholarship of $1000 to
Justin Brandt

2nd place - Winner of the of the Harper and Virginia C. Maybee Memorial Scholarship of $500 to:
Ben Krinke

3rd place - Winner of the Rose and Kenneth Shultz Memorial Scholarship of $300 to:
Natalie Doran
 

The Livingston County Chorale held its Twelfth Annual Vocal Music competition for County area high schoolers at Howell Baptist church last Sunday. 16 singers competed for three awards of $1000, $500, and $300. These three awards were endowed memorials given by the LeRoy and Lange families and the Shultz memorial trust. The scholarship money is intended to pay for college music instruction, voice lessons, or any summer music schools. The area high schools represented were Brighton, Howell, Pinckney, Hartland, South Lyon, and Fowlerville

First place was won by Justin Brandt, a sophomore at Howell and he sang Handel’s Si Tra i Ceppi. Justin plans on a career in music ministry. Second place was awarded to Ben Krinke, a senior at Brighton HS. He sang a classical arrangement of a nursery rhyme, Little Jack Horner. He will attend college next fall and pursue music and public policies major. Third place went to Natalie Doran who is home schooled and a senior. She sang La Violet, plans to pursue a music career and will attend Hillsdale College this fall.

Dr. Marilyn S. Jones, founding artistic director of the Chorale presented the awards after a long wait while adjudicators scored a very close contest. It was the first time that two boys ended in the top three. Entertainment was provided by the Ladies First ensemble of the Chorale Women’s Chorus directed by Patti Marshall-Doane



     

Information for participants is sent to high school choir directors, church choir directors and private voice teachers each year. The students must be residents of Livingston County or attend school in Livingston County to compete. Interested students complete the forms provided by their teachers. This includes an application, referral from the teacher and an audition tape.
